The Church & Mental Health in Australia

Download Report

Over the past 9 months, NAYBA has been conducting a pioneering piece of research into the Australian Church's response to mental health.

Informed by interviews with over 40 church leaders, mental health experts, theologians, and individuals with lived experience, we pray the results will be a source of encouragement and a call to action.

Helping Churches Transform Neighbourhoods

Jesus told us all to love our neighbour, and that's exactly what we help churches to do.

NAYBA (pronounced "neighbour") is a network of Christians from across the breadth of the Australian Church with a vision to see the Body of Christ come together in unity to serve those in need and help transform our communities, cities and the nation.

In pursuit of this vision, we help to measure the collective social impact of the faith community, provide a menu of best-practice projects ready for replication, and mobilise the Church on some of the key social issues of our time.

Good News Deserves To Be Shared

Share Your Story

As Christians, we're often asked: “How is the Church actually making a difference?” We know we’re called to love our neighbour as ourselves and, across our nation, there are countless examples of local churches and everyday Christians doing just that.

But how do we capture and quantify the ways that faith is having a positive impact in the community? How do we celebrate the ‘good news of the good works’ of the Church, while also identifying gaps and opportunities to even better serve people in need?

We want to tell a new story about what it means to be a follower of Jesus and we need your help. Get in touch with us now and share the good works of your church or ministry.

NAYBA Impact Audit

Our Current Focus

Addressing Mental Health, Together

Motivated by the prevalence of mental ill-health across our nation and the findings of own NAYBA Impact Audits, we have been seeking to better understand the unique role of the Church in responding to the issues of mental health, social isolation, and loneliness.

This culminated in a pioneering piece of research, The Church & Mental Health in Australia. You can read the report by downloading it here.

One of the key recommendations of the report was that the Church should explore how we can be part of a more holistic approach to community care, informed by the model of ‘social prescribing’.

Put simply, we see a future where churches come alongside key stakeholders from across the community to offer hope and healing to those who need it most.

NAYBA is delighted to be embarking on a pilot project to explore what social prescribing could look like in the context of Tasmania. To find out more or to express interest in taking part in the pilot, please reach out at australia@nayba.org or click here to find out more.

NAYBA IMPACT AUDIT

Through the NAYBA Impact Audit we help to measure the collective social impact of the Church in community.

To date, we have conducted audits in 8 locations across 4 states, engaged over 600 churches & faith groups from all major denominations, identified 1,000+ faith-based community service activities, and revealed more than $150 million in social impact value to the wider community.

To read the final reports from some of our recent audits, check out the below resources. To conduct a NAYBA Impact Audit in your city or region, please get in touch with us at australia@nayba.org.

NAYBA RECOGNISED PROJECTS

We search the country (and the world) for the very best in church-led community service projects. These projects are then compiled into a menu of options that can be replicated by churches of any size or shape, eliminating the need to reinvent the wheel.

To find a Recognised Project that could serve your church or community, please see the list of resources below.
